YA Scavenger Hunt Spring 2020!

Welcome to the
YA Scavenger Hunt!

Hi! I’m J.M. Sullivan,  your host for this leg of the hunt! I am a sparkle enthusiast and a coffee fanatic. I absolutely ADORE fairy tales and have a tendency of turning them on their heads!

When I’m not writing, you can find me at home watching scary movies, or on Twitter where I get all of my author friends to share their story secrets on my monthly #AuthorConfession game! if you want to learn more, come say hi!

For my participation In the Scavenger Hunt, I’ve hidden some of my very own #AuthorConfessions for you to find, and one lucky winner will win ebooks of my Neverland Transmissions series, SECOND STAR and LOST BOY!

I wish you all the best of luck, but now, keep reading! You’ve got a Scavenger Hunt to finish!

Participating Teams

The YA Scavenger Hunt is a bi-annual event that was organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers an opportunity to access EXCLUSIVE bonus materials from their favorite authors–and as a cool way to earn some AMAZING prizes! As you can see from the picture above, this event has grown like MAD and readers now have a chance to win books from a ton of fantastic authors!

On this hunt, you not only get access to exclusive content from each author, you also get a clue for the hunt. Add up the clues from each team and you can enter for our prize. One lucky winner will receive one book from each author on the hunt in my team! But play fast: this contest (and all exclusive bonus material) will only be online for 120 hours!

To find out more about the hunt, visit the YA Scavenger Hunt page for ALL the information about the event. You’ll also be able to access links to all of the authors participating AND see the full list of prizes that you might win!

Directions: Below, you’ll notice that I’ve listed my favorite number. Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on the PURPLE TEAM, and then add them up (calculators approved!)

Entry Form: Once you’ve added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify.

Rules: Open internationally, anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian’s permission to enter. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must submit the completed entry form by April 7th at noon Pacific time. Entries sent without the correct number or without contact information will not be considered.

There are SIX contests going on simultaneously, and you can enter them all! I am a part of the PURPLE TEAM, but there is also a red, gold, green and purple team that you can visit for a chance to win completely different sets of books!

Now that we’ve taken care of the formalities, it’s time for some fun! This year, I have the honor of hosting the lovely Amy Fellner Dominy!

AMY FELLNER DOMINY

Amy grew up loving to read and figured out at an early age that books were magical and necessary. She started submitting her own stories to be published when she was thirteen! Amy writes the stories of her heart…usually about teens facing uncertainty and trying to figure out the world and where they fit in.

Or where they might stand out.

Her newest novel is the swoony YA romance, Announcing Trouble. The follow-up, How to Quit Your Crush, will be out in May 2020.

You can learn more about Amy and her incredible work by visiting her website or checking out her books HERE. OR, you can keep reading to see a note from Amy and her EXCLUSIVE CONTENT for her novel ANNOUNCING TROUBLE.

Hey there! I’m so happy to share a never-before-read scene from ANNOUNCING TROUBLE. What should you know? Well, Josie is strong, stubborn and she has a wickedly sarcastic sense of humor. Garrett is cocky and confident but he’s got a soft heart and a soft spot for Josie—even if she wants nothing to do with him at first. This is a first-date scene that never made it into the final book. BUT…there was one line I loved so much I knew I had to put it in another scene. Can you guess? I’ll tell you which one at the end.

Bonus Content

“My hockey dude has shorter legs than yours!”

Garrett rolls his eyes and still manages to whisk the ball past a row of my defenders. With a flick of his wrist, he traps the ball under the legs of one of his dudes. “Standard legs, Walters. Don’t blame your men on your lack of skills. They’re doing the best with what you’re giving them.”

It’s Saturday and our date has turned out to be a trip to the arcade. Garrett has challenged me to an Olympic-style Quadathlon. A triathlon but with one more sport. He totally made up the word but he says it means four sports and one winner. We’ve already played pool and darts—he won both of those. But I was the victor in ski ball which means I need Foosball to tie.

I’ve got my hands on the rods, my blue-shirted foosball men are facing Garrett’s red ones. I’m on edge while he wiggles the ball under the wooden figure. When I tried doing that, the ball shot loose. “You’re cheating,” I say. “Zone infraction.”

“There are no zone infractions in foosball.”

“Well there should be.”

With a sudden flick, Garrett passes the ball from one figure to the other and then smacks it past my goalie for another score.

“Damn.”

He pumps both fists in the air. “I believe that’s game, Walters. Game, set and Quadathlon.”

“That’s not even a word. And this is a stupid game.” I spin my rods in disgust. I’m not an athlete, but that doesn’t mean I’m not competitive. “Why is it called foosball, anyway? Someone couldn’t spell football?”

“We could call it table soccer,” he says with an easy smile. “Does that make the loss any less painful?”

“You’re such a bad winner.”

His blue eyes sparkle like all the flashing lights in here. “I am not.”

“Winners are supposed to be gracious. They’re supposed to downplay their glory in deference to the tender feelings of their opponents.”

He comes around the table. “Did I hurt your tender feelings? I’ll kiss them and make them better.”  He leans into my neck and I shiver as his lips brush the side of my jaw, my throat.

“Garrett—”

“Am I missing the right spot? You keep your tender feelings…lower?”

I laugh and push him away. When he meets my gaze, he’s smiling, but beneath the playfulness, there’s a hum of electricity that’s been crackling between us since he picked me up at five o’clock. For the tenth time, I remind myself to breathe. I remind myself to keep a little distance, a little space—for safety sake.

“You hungry?” he asks. He twines his fingers through mine.

So much for distance. He’s been doing this all evening. Putting an arm around my waist, holding my hand, running fingers through my ponytail. I’m not sure he even knows he’s doing it. Each time, my body goes looser…and tighter. He’s Garrett, I remind myself. A master at touches and touching. Of course he’s good at this.

But, oh heaven, do I have to like it this much?

Mom’s words are still cycling through my mind, but I didn’t need her to warn me. I can be afraid all by myself. I want a relationship, yes, but one that I control. With Garrett, I don’t feel in control of anything.

He makes a path for us through the rows of games and into the cafe. He waves at someone—we keep bumping into kids he knows and I think about my social circle which is the size of an M & M. I’ve never been one to make a lot of friends—I moved too much for that and it was easier if I only had to say goodbye to one or two friends. But I remind myself that I’m settled now. I could’ve branched out more. Will I if this thing works out between the two of us? Or is it Garrett I’ll be saying goodbye to?

“This is my friend, Josie,” he says, introducing me to a guy whose name he just told me and I already forgot. I don’t have to wonder if the “friend” label is a way of keeping me secret because he’s reaching for my hand again. In the cafe no one says hi, but a group of girls turn to check him out. I’m not surprised. He’s in a white v-neck tee that seems designed to show off every hour he’s put in at the gym. As always, my insecurities come out masked by snark.

“It’s weird being with someone so pretty,” I grumble.

“We’ll work on your choice of adjectives in a minute.” He steps into line and I move beside him. “Weird good or weird bad?”

“Weird bad.”

He glances at the table of girls and then meets my gaze. “You know there’s no one I’d rather be with.”

And there it is.

Wondering which is the line I kept in the actual book?

It’s when Garrett says,

“Am I missing the right spot? You keep your tender feelings…lower?”

That whole bit made me smile. I hope it made you smile, too. You’ll find that in Chapter Thirty-Four of Announcing Trouble.

  1. I would definitely go with option C for sure! I do like option A with the Alice look alike but I tend to like book covers without the “sexy girls” on them. Thanks so much for the chance!!

  2. I picked Option 2

  3. I like option 2 because it’s modern and the model is gorgeous.

  4. option 2

  5. #2

  6. #3 is my favorite!

  7. Option 2

  8. I like how eye-catching 2 is, but I know I wouldn’t pick it off the shelf because of the “cheap sexy girl” vibe from it. Option 3 is definitely what I would pick up to read.

  9. Option 1 was my favorite

  10. All are lovely but I was drawn to cover three.

  11. I chose option 3 because while I really liked #2, #3 felt more fitting based on the summary of the book. I cant wait to read Alice someday!!

  12. I love #2 and #3, but I ultimately voted for #3 !! It seems much more fitting for a darker retelling.

  13. Option 3. It’s fantastic and has the dark fantasy look about it.

  14. I went for option 2!

  15. I picked Option 3.

  16. I love option A. She looks like a stronger character in this one. Thanks for being part of the YASH!

  17. Loved option 3 it was unique

  18. i debated between 2 and 3 but in the end, the vibrancy of #2 won out.

  19. I picked Option 2!

  20. I picked option 1, but all of them are eye-catching!

  21. I absolutely loved the third cover, I’d grab that in a heartbeat. Though Alice retellings are my favorite stories, so I’d probably grab it with any of the cover options, lol! It’s definitely on my to-read list! Thanks for being part of YASH!

  22. I picked #1

  23. I would pick up any of them but I voted for option 2

  24. I thought they were all good, but if I saw the 3rd cover I would grab that one in a heart beat! Can’t wait to read it!!

  25. Loved Option 3!!

  26. I actually picked option 1 because I’m not one to pick a real-life person cover and I guess option 3 is a bit too vintage looking for me

  27. Option 2

  28. I liked option C best!
